Try Something New: Capoeira Academy Celebrates Grand Opening with Free Classes

Monday September 21 , 2015

Capoeira Academy is celebrating the grand opening of its new Whyte Avenue location September 21st to 26th with a week of free classes.

What is Capoeira? According to Trent Magis, President of Capoeira Academy, “It’s hard to put into words. It’s just something you have to experience.”

More mysterious than the pronunciation of the word itself are the historical origins of Capoeira. Originating in Brazil, many believe Capoeira evolved as a form of self-expression for slaves during times of oppression. Capoeira has been described as “martial arts disguised as dance:” a fusion of rhythm, movement, music, and fighting. However, rather than a fight, Capoeira is most often called a ‘game’ where two players—capoeiristas—meet in the roda (circle) and engage in a fluid, rhythmical conversation with the music and the other.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Magis says, “The community around Capoeira is very warm and inviting…anyone of any skill set can try. We’ve had grandmas try with their grandkids, we’ve had parents try it…you can bring what you have to Capoeira and make it fit.”

Boasting 1000 square feet of freshly renovated studio space, Capoeira Academy is located at 10324 82 Avenue in Suite 103 (in the corridor next to Twist Ultra Lounge).

A full repertoire of kids, beginner, and intermediate classes are offered weekly. For more information about free classes during grand opening week visit
