Top Five Places to Study in Old Strathcona

With exams right around the corner, many students will be hitting the books in and around campus in preparation. Looking for some options? Old Strathcona offers some ideal cafes fit as study locations as an alternative to the library. We took it upon ourselves to find some of the best study spots Strathcona has to offer. We hope this guide will be useful!

5.  Starbucks - Scona Market

Why we love it: Low noise level, a floor plan that allows a sense of openness, but also provides quieter nooks, and it is off the beaten track.

Power outlets: 3

Ambience: Low ambient noise, waves of traffic, music volume low.

Wi-Fi: Yes

Lighting: Bright light

Price Range: $$$$$


4. Remedy on Whyte

Why we love it: Open late, also the large window provides a welcome break to long study sessions, through people watching. Chai latte is a must!

Ambience: Cozy. Music volume medium.

Seating: Small tables and a high “counter” table

Wi-Fi: Yes

Lighting: Bright light

Price Range: $$$$$


3. Second Cup at Varscona

Why We Love It: The environment is cozy and offers a solid study experience due to the wide variety of seating options available.

Power outlets: 4

Ambience: Lower traffic, music volume low.

Seating: Lots of variety, tables, high “counter” seating (in front of a window), and arm chairs.

Wi-Fi: Yes

Lighting: Medium light

Price Range: $$$$$


2. Block 1912

Why we love it: It has the most space and personality, and serves a  large variety of food and drink. If it doesn’t fit your study tastes it is definitely an awesome social space.

Power outlets: 4

Ambience: High traffic, lots of groups, music on the louder side

Seating: Lots of table space, couches, and tables can accommodate larger groups.

Wi-Fi: Yes, with password

Lighting: Low light

Price Range: $$$$$


1. Starbucks in Chapters

Why we love it: It has a large open space overlooking the Chapters entrance, and is surrounded by books (can be a good study break to browse through them).

Power Outlets: 3

Ambience: Usually quiet, but gets busy, music volume low.

Seating: Plenty of small tables and armchairs

Wi-Fi: Two options: Indigo and Starbucks. (Indigo requires Plum Rewards card, which is free).

Lighting: Low light

Price Range: $$$$$
