Western Canada Fashion Week kicks off this week!

Thursday September 18 , 2014

September is always an exciting month- school starts, the air becomes crisper, and fall fashion hits stores. September also ushers in a great variety of fashion events, including Western Canada Fashion Week, which is hosted at the ATB Financial Arts Barns.

Andrew Gonzalez, owner of Lucid Lifestyle, still remembers when WCFW started, with its humble beginnings in a tent on Churchill Square. Now the event brings hundreds of designers, hair and makeup professionals, models, and attendees to the Arts Barns for a week of local fashion talent. With a mandate of supporting young talent and building a fashion community, WCFW fits into Old Strathcona perfectly. Gonzalez describes the Old Strathcona retailers as a supportive community that appreciates collaboration, making projects like WCFW’s Whyte Ave Showcase a great success; other local businesses offer their support to these events too, salons offering hair services or bars and eateries hosting after-parties.

The event is also a great opportunity for emerging designers to connect with local retailers like Gonzalez. Western Canada Fashion Week makes it easy for buyers and designers connect, bringing the fashion off of the runways and into the hands of the local shopper. Local boutiques have a great opportunity to bring local talent into their shops, particularly with their greater ability to order smaller runs and promote smaller local labels.

Regardless of your involvement or interest in the fashion industry, Western Canada Fashion Week is an event that has something to offer to everyone, whether you’re looking for a new designer to carry in your store or if you’re just a casual observer hoping for a fun night out. WCFW runs from September 18 – 27, 2014 in the Westbury Theatre in the Arts Barns; Visit their website for a detailed schedule and ticket information, westerncanadafashionweek.com
