#ShopLocalGiveBack - Doan's Vietnamese Restaurant
Saturday December 29 , 2018
We’re pleased to feature another long-standing business in our ‘hood! Doan’s Vietnamese Restaurant has been a staple for delicious Vietnamese eats in Old Strathcona since 1996. The Nguyen family opened up their original restaurant downtown in 1988, and Doan’s eventually made its way across the river a few years later.
Doan’s is very much a family affair – and we were lucky enough to get to speak with Jackson and Loan Nguyen, who are the son and daughter-in-law of Doan and Canh, the original owners. They’re very passionate about the future of the restaurant, and also about charitable giving. They are very involved in supporting the Make A Wish Foundation (MAW) and have been for about 6 years. Loan works directly with MAW as a Wish Grantor. As a Wish Grantor, you work directly with a Wish Child helping fulfill their wish and keep the child excited and informed until their wish becomes reality. This can take the form of parties, scavenger hunts, amusement park visits, etc. Doan’s generously sponsors all of these activities, be it through donating food, money or time!
Loan is also part of the Medical Outreach Committee with MAW and they visit the Stollery and Ronald McDonald House monthly to do activities and crafts with the kids. A particular favourite is Halloween, when the children at Ronald McDonald House can go door to door and trick-or-treat inside, followed by a rockin’ dance party! They also regularly cook dinner for all the families staying there, with all of the food being donated by the restaurant. Loan was hooked from her very first experience, and foresees a longstanding continuing relationship with the organization!
So, the next time you pop over to Doan’s you can make sure you’re leaving with a full belly AND a warm heart. Pro tip: Make sure you come hungry, and ALWAYS order the chicken curry soup. Stretchy pants are also recommended!
