#ShopLocalGiveBack - The Paint Spot
Saturday December 22 , 2018
Art supplies, classes, and Art Walk – oh my! The Paint Spot is a busy hub for all creatives looking for support, supplies, exposure and friendly chats. They are strong supporters of the artistic community at large, and are well known for their passion for murals and bringing visual art to our neighbourhood – for over thirty years!
Kim Fjordbotten (owner) and her roster of talented staff are busy bees year-round, scheduling programming for The Paint Spot and Artelier Studios, running all their busy social media accounts, planning and executing the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, and much more.
The Paint Spot is also a vocal advocate for more public art in our neighbourhood. When Kim took over the store, there were only 2 murals in Old Strathcona. That tally has blossomed, and now boasts 26 murals and counting! They work with Capital City Cleanup as a vendor to offset costs for paint, anti-graffiti coating, and supplies for the artists as needed. They also act as mentors to help steer mural artists in the right direction for creating a budget, buying the right supplies, and where to start!
Local artists can gain exposure through their many exhibitions, and their workshop space (Artelier Studios) contracts out 25 artists to teach a wide variety of classes. They’re also generous sponsors for many silent auctions and door prizes for art-related causes. As Kim says, “As long as it’s art-related, we’ll heavily support it however we can, especially community-based projects. We can usually work something out with goods or discounts to make everyone happy!”
Catch Kim in action on their YouTube channel, demonstrating their products and delivering creative project ideas! Better yet, go visit in-store and find some great gifts for the artist on your list. While you’re shopping don’t forget to snap a quick photo, tag @oldstrathcona on Twitter or Instagram, and use #ShopLocalGiveBack for a chance to win some GREAT prizes – one of them being entry to an art class courtesy of The Paint Spot.
