You Spin Me Right Round
Monday June 06 , 2016
Recently I had the privilege of attending a spin class at the relatively new spin studio in Edmonton called YEG Cycle. I had been to spin classes before and thoroughly enjoyed them once I mastered the ability to not have a broken you know what the next day. Naturally, I sauntered into the class like I was a pro at this to only find that I know nothing of the world.
If you’ve never been to a spin class before, it can seem pretty daunting to attend your first class. But the instructor always asks and helps you get your bike all set up properly and will go through the steps of what to expect in the class.
Let’s start at the beginning. I walked in at 10:00am and it was a delicious assault on the senses right off the bat. The music was already blaring, there were TONS of people chit chatting, signing in, and getting ready. I told the lovely ladies behind the desk that it was my first time and they were very helpful. I wandered into the change room which is equipped with showers, bathrooms, lockers, and an open space to hang your junk if you don’t want to use the lockers.
The cool thing about this studio is that they give you proper footwear for the bikes, which I had never seen before. Ideal as hell! I walked into the class, the lights were low and it was already filling up fast. I grabbed a towel, 5lb dumbbells, and a bike. Not 2 seconds later, someone comes up to me with her friend and says this was her bike. WHOOPS, I must have missed her stuff sitting on the bike, so I wandered over to another bike and plopped down on it. Two seconds later, someone comes up to me and says “that’s my bike”. What the hell, was I drunk. So I asked her what the deal was and she said bikes are assigned at the front desk. Classic Carolyn, screwing shit up.
Finally, Farha the motivator, started up the class. There is a lot of woohoo-ing, high fiving your partner, and organized chaos. The music was absolutely dynamite for the class. My favourite part of the class was the use of their lights. They have a million light bulbs popping out of the ceiling and the instructor controls what colours, speed, certain light bulbs come on during each ride. I was sitting right in front of the air conditioning so anytime it kicked in, my hair would fly all over the place (short hair problems). The only way I can sum up the entire experience is that it felt like I was in Mad Max: Fury Road.
JUST ANOTHER DAY AT SPIN.
When I saw that we used dumbbells in this class and they only went up to 5lbs I was all “pfft, I can do more than 5lbs, where are the heavier weights?!” I am dumb. I am a dumbbell. About halfway through, we sat up and started using them and it was definitely the hardest part of the class, but that’s because I’m useless at all upper body things.
The absolute key to a great spin class, besides the music selection, is the instructor. Farha is that key. She kept on pushing you at the right moments, knew when we should take it down a notch and her ability to talk with the beat of the music was on par. Normally, when instructors tell a class to bump up their resistance, I’ve been known to ignore that continuous instruction, but not with Farha’s class. I bumped that shit up, I bumped it up good.
After the class, you get a nice cold towel to cool you down which felt like goddamn heaven.
They have classes all day, every day starting at 6am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. Every Friday evening, they have a GIV’R class which is a $10 charity ride. 100% of all proceeds are donated to the charity of their choice, which is pretty awesome. This class definitely kicked my ass and I’m kind of annoyed at the fact that I’m not there RIGHT NOW. I personally find spin to be an addicting workout because it’s fast paced and you get to sit. Sitting is the best so why not kick your ass while doing it?
I would highly recommend checking a class out at this studio!
