Too Much Fun at Crankpots

Sunday February 07 , 2016

Hello there! It’s now been three months since I have moved to this city.  I’m still exploring and finding new interesting avenues especially in the Old Strathcona district, since I live here.  Last week I visited the Crank Pots ceramic studio on Whyte Ave. Many of you may have seen this place or passed by it before. To be honest, I walked by this place literally a million times and always said to myself, next time I’ll definitely go inside.

Finally last week I did and thought to myself ‘why didn’t I come here sooner?’ I have done a lot of paintings before, mostly acrylic and oil on canvas. But I had never tried ceramic painting before and I have to tell you it was so much FUN!

The atmosphere in the studio is so relaxed and friendly. There is music playing and you can see people engrossed and enjoying their pieces of art. There are tons of options to choose from, pots, mugs, plates, platters, trinkets, vases and more. I decided to start with painting a small bowl. I did have an idea of what I wanted to paint but did not know how to go about it.  The instructor was so friendly and explained everything to me, how the colors should be used, how many layers you should use to get the effect that you want, how the bowl would look after firing it up and so forth.

Crank Pots Ceramic studio is not a place where you could go only if you knew how to do ceramic painting. Even if have not done any painting before and would love to do a fun creative hands-on activity, this is the place for you. When I was there, there were a couple of moms enjoying painting with their children.  The kids were so happy and excited. It’s so much fun to see how children think of color and forms and shapes.

You can visit their website and check out the rates. They just charge $3 as firing fee and you don’t even have to pay for the studio (which is also minimal), if you go on weekdays before 4pm. You just have to pay $5 for the paints and $3 for the firing. What a fun way to get out of your routine and spend an afternoon with your friend or just by yourself.

As you can see on the website, they host parties, events for brides, date nights, ladies night out and even other corporate events where you could bring your own food and drinks have a great time together. That got me thinking, and I just made a small list for you guys that may motivate you to try out this place if you haven’t already.

So here you go:

  1. It’s a perfect gift to give your loved ones. You could even write a personalized message.

  2. You could create a tea-set for yourself with your hand drawn design

  3. You could have birthday celebrations. Kids or Adults would equally enjoy and you could even get a discount if you are more than six in number.

  4. A lovely date. You could even take your own wine.

  5. A personalized gift for a bride from all her friends or family with personal messages written.

  6. It’s fun activity to teach coloring to kids. Also help them understand form and structure and shapes.

  7. Helps build concentration and takes your mind off of things. Helps you feel relaxed.

  8. Create memories that can be cherished for a long time.

I had a lot of fun. Loved the way my bowl turned out. I was so excited for the whole week till I got it back after firing. Not bad for a first attempt, what say? Oh! And Valentine’s Day is just round the corner. If you haven’t already planned anything, this can be a fun and different surprise for a date or a gift.

Do check them out. It will be worth your time and money, I promise.
